Osteoporosis:
Prevention & Correction

Osteoporosis is rampant in epidemic proportions across this nation. It is one of the highest causes of death & injury of women & men in America. Osteoporosis robs calcium from the bones, & over a period of years causes the bones to become very fragile.

What is the Risk?

If not treated, osteoporosis can cause fractures. The highest risk is fracture of the hip joint. Frequently these fractured joints heal poorly. Many elderly with these fractures die within a few years as a result of complications related to fracture healing & the inability to walk normally.

Who is at Risk?

Women are at a higher risk than men, due to hormonal changes at menopause. It can begin at any age, but usually is found after 35 years of age. By the time it is discovered, deterioration and previous fractures have often occurred. Men are lower at risk, and frequently found after fractures have occurred. Women & men should begin testing at age 35.

How do I find out if I am at risk?

Schedule for the OS Risk Screening & Seminar with Dr. Forbess. See our special offer in this newsletter to get started!

What is the laboratory testing involved?

Initially we order a bone resorption test. This is a specialized urine test. It establishes how fast calcium is being lost by the body. If no calcium is being lost by the body, then you are at low risk for osteoporosis. This test is the best predictor of osteoporosis risk & detects bone loss earlier than any other test.
Other tests involves an x-ray exam to evaluate bone density. These tests reveal the presence of osteoporosis.

Hormone testing is very important for women. Estrogen & progesterone influence the proper use of calcium in the body. We use a salivary test to find your body's level of these hormones.  It is collected over a 28 day period for accuracy & establishes if adequate estrogen & progesterone are available.

What is the holistic approach? How can you help me?

First we find out if you are at high or low risk. This begins with a consultation.. You will be asked a series of questions to find out your predisposition to osteoporosis

The next step for those at risk is an examination to evaluate risk factors for osteoporosis (such as diet, lifestyle, exercise, etc.). Those at risk may need diagnostic testing, such as the bone resorption or other testing mentioned before. After receiving the results, we’ll recommend diet modifications and lifestyle changes that help prevent or reverse osteoporosis & bone loss.

If you are at high risk or already have osteoporosis, we may add necessary supplements specific to your condition, including vitamins, minerals, herbs, etc. that have shown in research to safely reverse osteoporosis, without hormone replacement therapy.

Come to the OS Risk Screening & Seminar and we will establish if you are at risk.

Where do you get your knowledge on osteoporosis?

Quite a bit of cutting edge research has been done on osteoporosis (over 3800 articles in the last ten years alone), & most of this has focused on alternatives to hormone replacement therapies. I also utilize textbooks, attend seminars on the subject, as well as consult with other professionals in the field.

What about Hormone Replacement Therapy?

The medical solution for women at menopause is hormone replacement therapy, but this has been associated with higher rates of various forms of cancer.

Do I need Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT)?

That is always your choice. Most women can safely use alternatives without the need of HRT. With those already on an HRT program, it is not recommended that you discontinue HRT until you are on an alternative program (such as the one we offer). Additional testing may be performed periodically to assure success. If you desire, Dr. Forbess will be happy to show the results to your MD. This can be especially educational for the MD not familiar, or not supportive of alternative approaches. Osteoporosis can be beaten in most instances, without the risks of HRT!
